Kane Becomes First Englishman to Win Ballon d’Or in 25 Years
Harry Kane has won the 2026 Ballon d’Or, becoming the first Englishman to receive football’s most prestigious individual honour since Michael Owen in 2001.
The 33-year-old Bayern Munich and England captain was presented with the coveted golden ball in London last night, bringing an end to a 25-year wait for an English winner and further strengthening his legacy in the game.
Kane confirmed our football prediction by finishing ahead of Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappe in second and Lamine Yamal of Barcelona in third. He also clinched the Gerd Muller Trophy as the season’s outstanding striker following a stunning campaign for both club and country.
The numbers that powered Kane to glory were nothing short of remarkable!
Bayern’s talisman scored 73 goals and provided eight assists in 65 appearances for his club and the Three Lions. His 61 goals in 51 matches for the Bavarians is the highest single-season total by a player in the club’s history and the most for a club in one of Europe’s top five leagues since Cristiano Ronaldo for Real Madrid.
Kane ended the Bundesliga season as top scorer with 36 goals, finishing 17 ahead of the closest challenger and winning the Torjagerkanone for the third consecutive year. His contributions helped Bayern retain the title and complete the domestic treble with victories in the DFB-Pokal and German Super Cup.
Kane’s Comments After Being Crowned World’s Best Player in London
With the Ballon d’Or now secured, Kane joins an exclusive group, becoming just the fifth Englishman to win the award after Stanley Matthews (1956), Bobby Charlton (1966), Kevin Keegan (1978 and 1979), and Michael Owen (2001). Speaking after the ceremony, the English skipper said:
"Not many people would have thought it, and maybe even I wouldn't have thought I'd be this far. I had to go through many ups and downs, especially early in my career. I was never the person that people thought was going to be the superstar like some of the guys now.
"I had to bide my time and work hard, a lot of times it was me against my own mind and I had to come through it, I had to show self-belief, determination. I think that grounded me even when I did make it at the highest level to keep improving and keep getting better."
Additionally, Kane is now the first Bayern Munich player to win the Ballon d’Or since Karl-Heinz Rummenigge in 1981. His 61 goals in all competitions for the Bavarians were 19 more than any other player in Europe’s top five leagues.
