Tournament favorites are still going strong
The tournament favorites, Spain, have been impressive in the 2025 UEFA Women's Euro and enter this quarter-final clash against Switzerland to book their spot in the semi-final.
It can't be denied that La Roja is simply the better side on paper, not because of their status or pedigree in this tournament, but because of their commendable run in the group stages. So far, their participation in the quarter-final is their third straight appearance.
La Roja won three out of three games and finished at the top in Group B with a five-point lead. That group included the likes of powerhouse Italy, Belgium, and Portugal.
In the group stages, Spain defeated:
- Portugal 5-0 in their opening match
- Belgium 6-2 on the second matchday
- Italy 3-1 on the second matchday
Switzerland is eyeing a big upset in Wankdorf Stadium.
Switzerland is the host nation in this 14th edition of the UEFA Women's Euro, and it is safe to say their appearance in the quarter-final comes as a surprise. For more insights on their clash with Spain in the quarter-final, we suggest you head on to our Spain vs Switzerland prediction.
Pia Sundhage's charges did not get off to a good start in their opening group stage game against Norway, as they found themselves on the receiving end of a 2-1 defeat.
However, they quickly steadied the ship with their first win in Group A, beating Iceland 2-0 before playing a 1-1 draw against Finland on the final matchday.
It was sufficient to see them finish in second place with four points, level with third-placed Finland. It's thanks to their slight goal differential that enabled them to progress to the quarter-finals.
On the defensive side of things, they finished with the joint-third-best defensive record. If they can keep on with the same mentality and hold off a Spain side that scored a whopping 14 goals in their group, then progression to their first-ever semi-final is possible.
