Cameroon and Gabon headline the second fixture in Group F of the Africa Cup of Nations 2025 this Wednesday. Gabon are out to capitalise on the Indomitable Lions' institutional chaos, which in the past weeks caused confusion and derailed the nation's preparations and ambitions for the tournament. The question remains: can the Panthers tame the Indomitable Lions? Let's find out in the article below!

Cameroon: The Indomitable Lions face a tough opponent

Cameroon is the second most successful nation in the Africa Cup of Nations, having lifted the trophy five times. However, the prestigious silverware has eluded the African giants for the past eight years.

The Indomitable Lions are out to rewrite the script and win their sixth AFCON title. By mouth, that should be easily achieved, but when it comes to putting words into action, that's where the real difficulty begins.

For a nation of their caliber, it's obvious that they are no newbies in this tournament, making their 22nd appearance. Out of those appearances, they reached the finals seven times.

On paper, they should be able to register their first three points in the opening match against Gabon. Unluckily for them, history is not on their side, as reality suggests that their opponents are not ones to be messed with.

David Pagou's side has the upper hand against Gabon overall. The main issue has been their performances in AFCON. Surprisingly, they've yet to register a win in two meetings (D1, L1), and for a nation with squad depth failed to score in both encounters.

Check out Cameroon's past AFCON meetings against Gabon:

  • 13 January 2010, Group stage (Group D): Cameroon 0:1 Gabon
  • 22 January 2017, Group stage (Group A): Cameroon 0:0 Gabon

Will Cameroon's recent institutional chaos derail their campaign?

cameroon players showing appreciationIn the recent weeks leading up to the Africa Cup of Nations 2025, Cameroon grappled with profound institutional turmoil. Due to this, the senior national team did not have enough time to make the necessary preparations for the tournament, with many feeling this could derail their campaign before the ball is even kicked. The conflict began with the Cameroonian Football Federation, Samuel Eto’o, and former head coach Marc Brys.

Two different squads were put out by two coaches, both claiming legitimate authority. This led to the dismissal of former head coach Marc Brys, who took to the stand with the president of the Cameroonian Football Federation, Samuel Eto’o, calling him out in public as an egotistical person more focused on his image than the team's success.

The person leading the nation to success is David Pagou - appointed by Samuel Eto'o. In a surprising move, the 56-year-old left out key players such as Vincent Aboubakar and Andre Onana, to name a few. When questioned about this in an interview, he said he wanted to build a new team mentality with different players.

Gabon: The Panthers are giant killers and shouldn't be underestimated

Threat or no threat, Gabon has proven they know what it takes to win when confronted with one of Africa's most decorated teams. Their unblemished record against Cameroon in AFCON could be a game-changer and a possible route to snatching one or three points.

The Panthers have renewed ambitions for the current edition, and that's to reach the knockout stages for the first time since 2012. Having missed out on the 2023 edition, this marks their ninth appearance.

To reach the current finals, they had to pass through the qualification stages. In the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, they finished as runners-up in Group B, while host nation, Morocco, secured the top spot.

Check out Gabon's previous AFCON performances:

  • 1994: Group Stage
  • 1996: Quarter-finals
  • 2000: Group Stage
  • 2010: Group Stage
  • 2012 (hosts): Quarter-finals
  • 2015: Group Stage
  • 2017 (hosts): Group Stage
  • 2021: Round of 16

As you can notice from the above records, Gabon has never progressed beyond the quarter-finals in any of its last eight appearances.

Can Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang deliver at key moments?

Led by the charismatic Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Gabon will be relying on the Marseille player to guide them to greener pastures.

At 36 years old, he has proven that age is just a number as he is proving his enduring class week in, week out for the French club with his terrific performances. Having appeared in 14 games, he has scored five and provided five assists.

Regarding the numbers for the senior national team, he has scored 39 goals in 84 appearances, making him the undisputed record holder. Will his efforts in this tournament be crucial to leading Gabon to success?

Aubameyang is featuring in the AFCON finals for the fifth time. He has been a breath of fresh air in this tournament, scoring six goals and providing four assists. This sees him as the leading top scorer for his nation.
