The new year gets off to a great start with the African Cup of Nations taking place. Cameroon have won this title on five previous occasions with the last win being in 2017. Can they win a sixth title in 2024?

Cameroon Bid for Glory

Aboubakar the Cameroonian Champ

Cameroon head to the Ivory Coast in January 2024 hoping to win the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) for the sixth time in their history. Two of their titles were won in the 1980s and only once since 2002 have they been crowned the champions of Africa. They finished third in the last AFCON, only losing in the last four on a penalty shootout. With players such as Clinton N'Jie and Vincent Aboubakar, can they again become champions?

Another Title for Cameroon?

Toko Ekambi 2023

Cameroon are one of the favorites to win AFCON 2024 but it's not going to be an easy task for them at all. A look at their recent form gives mixed readings. They are a side that is strong at home and if this tournament was being held in Cameroon, we'd strongly fancy their chances of winning the title. However, on the road it's a totally different story and unless their away form shows improvement in Ivory Coast, a sixth AFCON title currently looks unlikely to be achieved.

Recent Cameroon fixtures have been in the qualifying rounds for the 2026 World Cup. It's gone well so far for them and they lead Group D with four points from their first two games. Their campaign began with a 3-0 home win over Mauritius, though it was only 1-0 going into the 87th minute. That was followed by a 1-1 draw in Libya, losing a first half lead.

Cameroon last won an away game in June 2022 and since then have played nine games with two draws and seven defeats. Goals have been hard to come by in away fixtures with only four scored in those nine games and failing to score in six of them. There have been some low-scoring away fixtures with all but two seeing under 2.5 goals scored and six ending in a 1-0 defeat for Cameroon. As we've said, improving their away form is an absolute must for them if they again want to go deep in AFCON. Reaching the last eight looks likely for Cameroon.

What Bets to Make on Cameroon in the 2024 AFCON?

cameroon goalkeeperThe first task for Cameroon is to safely negotiate their way into the knockout stages. At present they are in 46th position in the FIFA world rankings, making them the seventh highest ranked African nation. Bet365 offer odds of  2.75 on them winning Group C and 9.00 on Cameroon winning the title

In their group is Senegal who won the last AFCON tournament and are 20th in the rankings with only Morocco above them. Guinea are ranked 80th and Gambia down in 126th position. It's clear then that Cameroon are extremely likely to make it into the last 16 and will battle it out with Senegal for top spot in Group C.

Finishing second in their group could see them facing either hosts Ivory Coast or Nigeria in the last 16. If they were able to win Group C, then they'd be up against one of the best third place qualifiers.

They begin their AFCON campaign with a game against Guinea and we believe that they can get off to a winning start. Guinea are third in their World Cup qualifying group and are another country that struggles to get results away from home. Not since 2015 have they managed to get into the AFCON quarter finals and not won more than once in the finals since 2006. It's 1.91 at William Hill that Cameroon win this match.

Up next for Cameroon is the big match against Senegal. The two countries met in a friendly international played in France and Senegal won that game 1-0 with a Sadio Mane penalty giving the reigning AFCON champions the win. It's not going to be an easy game at all for Cameroon and likely to be a low-scoring one.

Their final group fixture is against Gambia who are in only their second AFCON finals. Their only other appearance was two years ago and they got to the last eight where they just happened to lose to Cameroon 2-0. A similar result looks likely in this tournament.
