An Atlantic Division matchup early on Thursday as the 35-18-8 Toronto Maple Leafs welcome the 29-29-4 Buffalo Sabres north of the border. This is the final game of five at home for the Leafs, only 2-2 in the first four, suffering defeats to the Vegas Golden Knights and the Boston Bruins but getting the better of the New York Rangers and the Arizona Coyotes. In theory, they should enjoy a slightly easier level of opponent here compared to three of their most recent four visitors but they have struggled with the Sabres so far this season. Their two losses at the hands of the Sabres have been as bad at the back as they have been in any game. The Leafs are just 19th in defence this season with their blue line rocked with injuries all campaign, losing Ilya Lyubushkin in the recent game against the Rangers.
Things are looking tough for the Sabres, 10 points outside of a wildcard place in the playoffs, they would have to end the season with a remarkable run of wins if they are to get themselves a spot in the postseason. They have a pair of those over the Maple Leafs so far this season, scoring 15 goals in the process and in general have done well on the road in Canada, with three of their six highest scoring performances coming on the road and north of the border. Alex Tuch is one of the Sabres who most enjoys taking on Toronto. Since he joined Buffalo from Vegas, he has played the Leafs on eight occasions, scoring six and adding eight assists for a total of 14 points.
