Third seed Jelena Ostapenko and unseeded Tatjana Maria will meet in the semi-finals in Eastbourne. This comes four years after they last matched up, and in our prediction, we will be going for a three-setter.
Maria was eliminated in the qualifying rounds in her only previous appearance in Eastbourne. That was more than a decade ago. On her return, she has emerged as a strong candidate for the title.
A two-time tour champion on grass, the German fought her way to her second semi-final of the year without dropping a set. Tereza Valentova was the latest to fall to the veteran’s racket.
Maria, who is up to 104th in the live ranking, defeated Ostapenko in their only other encounter.
Ostapenko is on course to add her name to a coveted list of players to have won multiple titles in Eastbourne. The Latvian won her first title here in 2021 but lost in the final in her title defence.
Yet to lose on grass after making her grass season debut this week, Ostapenko made light work of Zeynep Sonmez in the quarter-finals.
