Sweden and Portugal face off In what is perhaps the most eagerly-awaited match-up in Group 2 of the EHF Euro 2024 main round. Both nations will be aiming to reach the last four of the competition with Sweden in second-place and Portugal sitting third in the group. They find themselves even on points at four, although it’s Sweden that holds the superior differential (+6 to -2). Sweden’s last match against Denmark finished 28-27 and was their only defeat of the tournament. They were able to make their presence felt against Bosnia-Herzegovina (29-20 win), Georgia (42-26 win), the Netherlands (29-28 win) and Slovenia (28-22 win). Glenn Solberg’s players have no intention of letting up against Portugal when the two face off this Sunday. A win would see them take a big step closer to the semi-finals of this European championship.

Portugal never ceases to surprise at this competition. They too have suffered only one defeat, also coming against Denmark by a score of 37-27. Other than that loss, they were able to record victories against Greece (31-24), the Czech Republic (30-27), Norway (37-32) and Slovenia (33-30). Although their attack is particularly effective, the same cannot be said of their defense. Therefore, it’s difficult to imagine them pulling off what would be a massive upset over the Swedes. There's plenty on the line even for the losing team in this matchup as the third-place finishing team qualifies for the fifth and sixth-placed playoffs.
