European champions Sweden are attempting to add the world title to their trophy collection. They are the co-hosts of this 2023 Men's World Handball Championships and are yet to taste defeat in this championship. The Swedes reached the 2021 world championship final, where they were beaten by Denmark. They haven't won the world title since 1999 and this is only their fifth quarter final appearance since then in this bi-annual world championships. They have won all their games in this 2023 world championships and won their main round group by four points from Hungary. That winning margin was two points more than any of the other group winners achieved. Sweden have won nine of their last ten matches, the only loss being in a friendly to Serbia earlier this month.

Egypt had a chance of winning Group IV of the main round and avoiding Sweden in the last eight. That wasn't to be though as the Egyptians were beaten by world champions Denmark in their final group game. They had previously finished top of their preliminary group with victories over USA, Morocco and Croatia. Wins against Belgium and Bahrain came in the main round group before being beaten 30-25 by the Danes. That was their second defeat in the last seven games. Another loss looms here against an impressive Swedish side.
