A place in Europe for next season is the incentive as Sunderland and Chelsea play on the final matchday of the 2025-26 English Premier League on Sunday at the Stadium of Light. The 10th-placed Black Cats (51 points) need to win and hope Brentford drop points, while the 8th-placed Blues can confirm European qualification with a win. The context of this match combined with the defensive concerns for both teams makes us go for a BTTS prediction in this match.
Sunderland’s first season back in the EPL was already a success regardless of the result here. However, a chance to qualify for Europe should get them going, as they aim for consecutive league wins for just the third time this season.
Chelsea were among the frontrunners to finish in the top four not long ago, but a run of six consecutive wins between March and May brought them crashing down. Although they arrested the slide with four points in their last two games, the Blues are still vulnerable. Who has the edge in this high-stakes game? Sunderland - Chelsea: Form Analysis
Sunderland earned a much-needed 3-1 away win at Everton last weekend for their first win in five league games (D2, L2). With just one point separating them from the top eight, they need to win here and hope Brentford fail to win against Liverpool.
The Black Cats have struggled at home in recent weeks, though, losing four of their last six league outings here (W1, D1). That said, the 1-0 win over Tottenham and the 0-0 draw against Manchester United in that run suggest they can’t be taken easily.
Sunderland have won just one of their last 16 final matches of a PL campaign.
That’s good news for Chelsea, who won 2-1 at home over Tottenham in a London derby last Tuesday. That was a refreshing result for the struggling Blues, who failed to win any of their seven EPL games before that win (D1, L6), including six consecutive defeats.
The Blues were equally poor on the travels, losing three of their last five away league games (W1, D1). That said, the 4-1 win over Liverpool and the 1-1 draw at Liverpool in that sequence point out that Chelsea can be a dangerous opponent.

Sunderland & Chelsea Squad Analysis
Sunderland are sweating over Omar Alderete after he was withdrawn early against Everton. Dan Ballard is suspended, while Bertrand Traore is out and Nilson Angulo remains doubtful.
The Black Cats are likely to line up in their usual 4-2-3-1 formation that morphs into an aggressive 4-3-3 as the game progresses. That would leave the scoring burden on Brian Brobbey, with the Dutch forward netting seven PL goals this campaign.
Granit Xhaka has six assists this season, the joint-most for Sunderland.
Joao Pedro is likely to slot back into the playing XI for Chelsea after sitting out the Tottenham win with a minor injury. Levi Colwill has only recently returned from a long-term injury but could play his part here. Romeo Lavia is another player in the doubtful bucket.
The Blues have usually used the 4-2-3-1 formation, except against Manchester City when they used a more robust 3-4-3 system. That should see Pedro start up front for the visitors, with the Brazilian looking to add to his count of 15 goals this Premier League campaign.

Our Sunderland vs Chelsea Prediction
Sunderland won the reverse fixture 2-1 and are looking to complete a season double over Chelsea for the first time since 2000-01. More than that, a chance to finish in European qualification spots should get the home team running, while Chelsea have a lot of ground to protect. A win here will guarantee the visitors European action, but their current form isn’t comforting.
Both teams have had their struggles defensively in recent times, which makes this an open contest. That’s why our Sunderland vs Chelsea prediction is BTTS.
Sunderland vs Chelsea Alternative Predictions
Draw
A straight shootout to qualify for Europe gives an extra dimension to this game as Sunderland look to end their successful season on a high. Chelsea have had a disappointing season, and failure to qualify for Europe will be a big blow for the incoming manager, Xabi Alonso. While the visitors have a better squad on paper and game-changing players, the stubborn hosts are unlikely to lay low. This has all the makings of a stalemate.
