South African heavyweights Stormers will play host to Sale Sharks in a Champions Cup clash penciled for Saturday. With a win and loss to both sides’ record in the competition so far, they are side by side, with Sale ahead in third. The identical records for both sides means that the English side is above by virtue of a superior points difference. Stormers commenced the Champions Cup on the wrong footing with a 35-26 loss to Leicester Tigers. They however found their footing in a last-gasp win over reigning champions Stade Rochelais. Stormers will be delighted to be at home against Sale as they are yet to lose a Champions Cup clash at home. The impressive run includes a Round of 16 victory against English side Harlequins but later exited to Exeter in the quarters. Stormers currently sit seventh in the United Rugby Championship buoyed by a run of three straight victories.
Sale Sharks will be seeking victory against Stormers to further boost their chances of qualifying for the playoffs. They kicked off their Champions Cup tourney with a 28-5 win over Stade Francais but lost 37-27 to Leinster. A blip in their recent Premiership Rugby form has seen them drop to fifth and out of the playoff places. Sale are coming from a deflating 22-14 loss to Bristol in their last outing, which saw Telusa Veainu and Ben Bamber yellow carded. Sale also suffered a massive blow ahead of the Stormers clash with fly-half George Ford ruled out. The England international suffered a knock to his knee against Northampton Saints at the end of December.
