The USA have won the last two FIBA World Basketball Cup tournaments but won't be completing a hat-trick. They had won all five of their matches in this year's tournament until losing 89-79 to France in the quarter finals. The first quarter ended level at 18-18 but France were able to take a six point lead into half time. That evaporated in the third quarter as the Americans took a three point lead. Their hopes of reaching another semi-final ended when France made a great comeback, winning the final quarter 26-13 handing the Americans their first world cup loss in 13 years.
Serbia were fancied to be the main contenders but also lost in the quarter finals. They were beaten 97-87 by Argentina, their second straight loss after being beaten by Spain at the second group stage. They went into the final quarter against Argentina trailing by just a point but the South Americans proved the stronger to eliminate the Serbs. Both these sides expected more from this tournament and if the Serbs defend as they did against Argentina, it's the USA who will get the win here.
