Serbia won their first four matches in this 2019 FIBA World Basketball Cup tournament. Their winning run came to an end when losing to Spain in the last match of the second group stage. That saw them finish second and rather than face Poland in the last eight, they had a tougher game against Argentina and lost by ten points. That ended their title hopes and left them with the target of finishing fifth in the classifications. They took on the USA in the first classification match and strormed to a 32-7 lead after the first quarter. The Americans fought back but the Serbs eventually ran out winners by five points.

The Czech Republic are ranked 24th in the world, 20 places below their opponents. They finished second in their initial group after losing to the USA but beating Japan and Turkey. The second group stage saw them defeat Brazil but lose to Greece leaving them second in their group. That led to a last eight match against the in-form Australians who defeated them 82-70. Now their aim is to finish as high as fifth and they beat Poland by 94-84 to reach this game against Serbia. The Serbs will have been thrilled to beat the USA and can clinch fifth place.
