Senegal are coming off a 1-1 draw in a buildup game against Iran. The African giants benefited from an own goal scored by Morteza Pouraliganji in the 55th minute but just nine minutes later they conceded. This was their second unbeaten game in as many outings, having earlier beaten Bolivia 2-0. The biggest miss for this game, and the tournament, will be Sadio Mane. Senegal are going to miss their talisman, who recently had surgery after sustaining an injury in a Bayern Munich game. For a side that rarely scores a lot, this is a big blow for Senegal, especially given Mane, their all-time leading scorer was pivotal in their qualification here as well as in winning their first African Cup of Nations title. With Senegal only playing in their third World Cup, there is no assurance Mane will have another chance in the biggest competition in the world, after having featured in the 2018 edition. The Dutch on the other hand, could be without Memphis Depay, who is still recovering from a hamstring injury. Antwerp forward Vincent Jansen could be the man replacing him, and he will have to be at his best to fill into Depay’s shoes. Depay has missed the better part of the last two months, and the Barcelona man may be joined in the sidelines for this first game by right-back Denzel Dumfries, who hurt a knee in Inter Milan’s game against Atalanta.
