Off the back of radical changes, Schalke will commence their quest for a Bundesliga return with a home game against Eintracht Braunschweig. Heading into this Saturday match, here’s our preview and a prediction to go with it.

Die Knapen, seven-time Bundesliga champions, happen to be the highest profile side in Bundesliga 2 and they’ll want to rise from it this season. That charge starts at home against a team they’ve beaten four times in the last five meetings.

Also, when hosting this fixture, Schalke are unbeaten in seven straight games. After finishing just 11 points above the relegation zone last season, Schalke will be hoping for better times in 2024/25. They had a strong start in preseason, but finished on a low, failing to score in their final two friendly matches. That presents an area to focus on for Karel Geraerts.

Eintracht Braunschweig will know too well this is not an easy encounter as they face a rebranding Schalke. They don’t have a great run against Schalke but a strong finish to their preseason engagements should be encouraging enough.

Braunschweig won their final three warm-up games but kept only two clean sheets in the eight they played. Last season they finished just six points above the relegation region and this time they’ll want to do better.

Key to that will be a stronger start than last season’s when they won just once in their opening 12 matches. Notably, that win was against Schalke – a 1-0 victory at home. In wrapping up the season, Eintracht Braunschweig had another lean run, losing five of the final eight away matches. They conceded two or more goals in four of their closing six away matches in Bundesliga 2.
