As the Italian Serie A comes to a conclusion this weekend, Sassuolo will be at home to take on Udinese on Sunday. Both sides cannot rise from their current positions, but can drop lower based on other results. Sassuolo head to this match placed eighth on 51 points while Udinese have 42 points, in 14th place. For Sassuolo, the worst they can drop this season is ninth place, which means for the first time in four Serie A campaigns, they will get to finish in the top 10. Assessing their season, Sassuolo will place this as a good one and two names will stand out here; Francesco Caputo and Domenico Berardi, who have scored a combined 35 of the 69 goals the team has managed in Serie A so far. In their last match, Sassuolo saw off relegation threatened Genoa 5-0, with Berardi and Caputo once again key in the clash. Berardi scored one and provided three assists while Caputo scored twice to take his tally to 21. While they were outstanding against Genoa, it has not been an easy ride in recent matches; that win was the first in five matches and they were coming from two straight losses. On the other hand, Udinese’s massively negative goal difference means realistically they can’t rise higher. Their wins over Juventus and Cagliari ensured they won’t be relegated but it hasn’t been a good season for them, having spent half of the season among the bottom six sides. They head to this game straight from a 2-1 loss to relegation threatened Lecce, and will blame themselves for letting go of the lead in the game, though Lecce have to take credit for a good fightback. This season, so far, Udinese have only scored more than relegated Brescia and SPAL; their goal tally of 36 is just over half of what Sassuolo have managed, though defensively Udinese have been better than Sassuolo, conceding 11 lesser. For Udinese, their form away from home has been a major letdown, the team winning just five, and losing 10 of the 18 played. They have however improved in recent away games, scoring seven goals and winning three of their last four on the road. With this run, and having failed to score in just six of their away league matches this season, they will want to tap onto Sassuolo’s shortcomings in defence. Seven of Udinese’s last 10 matches have produced over 2.5 goals and they have three clean sheets in their last four away matches, a run they will want to extend here.
