Qatar welcomes Ecuador to the Al Bayt Stadium for the opening match of the FIFA World Cup 2022. This Group A fixture will pit the smallest ever host nation taking on a team that qualified from the South American qualifiers. Both teams will be regarded as the two outsiders to qualify for the knockout stages but will be buoyed by the news that one of the group favourites, Senegal, have lost their talisman and captain Sadio Mane to injury. They will fancy their chances of possibly finishing second to European giants the Netherlands. The match kicks off at 6pm local time and promises to be a spectacular start to football's global showpiece.
The bookies have Ecuador as favorites for the win at decent odds of 2.40 while the hosts offer great returns for a win at 3.20. The first match of the World Cup will be a cagey affair with both teams afraid to take risks therefore the draw could be a good bet at odds of 3.10. Qatar will be spurred on by a vociferous home crowd which should give them a massive lift. A great safety bet is the home team to win or draw at odds of 1.53

Qatar - Ecuador: Form Analysis
Qatar were spared the rigors of going through a gruelling qualification tournament due to being the host nation. However, this could be a negative factor as it's now been nearly a full calendar year since their last competitive match against Egypt in the Arab Cup. They have played 18 friendly matches since the start of the year and have only lost two of these games although the quality of the opposition was not the best. Ecuador, on the other hand, are battle hardened after finishing fourth in the South American qualifying group having faced the likes of Brazil and Argentina. They have proven extremely difficult to beat in recent matches, losing just once in their last 15 outings. Ecuador have had an incredible nine draws during this period with five wins as well.
Qatar's medical team have already been hard at work in the build-up to this match, as attacker Ahmed Alaaeldin came off in the friendly against Albania last week with an unspecified injury. He faces a tough battle to be fit for this match. The undisputed star for the home team is striker Almoez Ali who is the joint leading scorer for the hosts with 42 international goals. He is due to be partnered by Akram Afif in attack for a Qatar team notorious for being defense minded. They will probably line up with a five man defense led by Abdel Karim Hassan, while Captain Hassan Al-Haydos will eye his 170th cap behind the strikers. Ecuador also suffered an injury in their final warm up game as Byron Castillo came off before the break, but the 24-year-old was in fact the player caught up in the ineligibility storm and has been left out of the squad. As a result, either Angelo Preciado or Robert Arboleda will fill the right back slot for the South Americans, despite the latter only just coming back from an ankle fracture. Ecuador's front line will be led by all-time leading scorer Enner Valencia who has notched 35 goals for his country.
Qatar - Ecuador Key Points
In four of Qatar's last six matches there have been under 2.5 goals.
"Both teams to score” has hit in only two of the last eight matches for both Qatar and Ecuador.
Qatar have scored two goals in three of their last five matches and enter this fixture on a four match winning run.
Both sides have managed to keep three clean sheets over their last four matches, with each conceding just one goal.
There have been under 1.5 goals in Ecuador’s last six matches.
Ecuador have not scored more than a single goal in their last ten matches.
These teams have met three times previously with all the matches taking place in Qatar. Each team has won once with one draw although Qatar won 4-3 in the last match between the sides back in 2018. The hosts are playing in their first ever World Cup and will be desperate to avoid joining South Africa as the only other host nation to be eliminated in the group stage. Ecuador's biggest problem in their recent past has been their poor form in front of goal, failing to score in four of the last six matches. They also enter this tournament on a worrying run of four draws in their last five. Qatar will be hoping that they can get an early score against the visitors and then back their defense to claim the win. We are backing Qatar to win or draw this match due to their excellent defensive record.
