Partizan and Lugano will be eyeing better tidings in Europe when they meet in the Europa League this Thursday. The two sides are set to clash in the first leg of the 3rd qualifying round, with a focus on the playoffs. Here’s our preview of the match and a prediction.

Hosts Partizan are enjoying a strong start domestically but it is a complete contrast for them in Europe. Their hopes upon returning to the Champions League were quickly extinguished in straight defeats to Dynamo Kiev.

With a 9-2 aggregate loss, they dropped to the Europa League where they hope to do better. In the home leg of that defeat, Partizan suffered a 3-0 loss. They will be back at home seeking to bounce back and they warmed up well for it, with a 2-1 win against Zeleznicar Pancevo.

Lugano also marked their return to the Champions League this season. However, after a 23-year absence, their stay in the competition was short-lived, courtesy of home-and-away losses to Fenerbahce.

The two matches ended in a 6-4 aggregate loss. The Swiss side, however, recovered in the most recent game, beating Servette 3-1 in the domestic league. This is the form Lugano will want to carry to the Partizan game.

Their biggest strength as seen in their recent matches happens to be in attack; they’ve scored 10 times in the last five matches. In this shape, Lugano will hope to inject some solidity in their defending, having failed to keep a clean sheet in their last five matches. They have conceded nine times in the said five outings.
