Pakistan will bring their 2024 T20 World Cup campaign to an end with a dead-rubber match against Ireland on Monday afternoon. With Group A already decided, both these sides will play this match as a mere formality. Pakistan will be bitterly disappointed with themselves in this competition, having entered it as favourites to join India from Group A in the Super Eight. Unfortunately, a slow start ultimately proved to be their downfall as they suffered an opening match defeat in the super over to the United States, who have emerged as the surprise package of the tournament. The Shaheens threw away their second match from a winning position against India and were far from convincing in their only victory of the competition against Canada last week. While a place in the knockout round is now out of their grasp, Pakistan will feel a need to salvage some pride here, and are the clear favourites at the books. 

Meanwhile, Ireland were tipped to be a potential dark horse in Group A but they have struggled mightily to get going in this competition. They were beaten comfortably by group leaders India in their opening match but the real shock came in game two where they came up 12 runs short of Canada’s 138-run target. The final nail came on Friday when their must-win encounter with the United States was abandoned without a ball bowled, sealing their fate of exiting at the end of the group-stage matches. These two are no strangers to each other, having played a three-match T20 series just last month, which Ireland lost 2-1.
