St. James’ Park will burst into life on Sunday for the first Premier League fixture of the 2026-27 season - it’s Newcastle United taking on Liverpool. Ten goals were scored in the two matches between these sides last season, and our prediction is that both sides will get on the scoresheet in this one as well.
It has been a summer of massive change on Tyneside, with the Magpies set to kick off the new season under the guidance of Matthias Jaissle, who replaced Eddie Howe as manager last month. Additionally, with no European football on the cards this term after finishing 12th last season, the Geordies have also seen a handful of their star players depart during the transfer window.
The Reds also have a new boss at the helm in Andoni Iraola following the somewhat surprising sacking of Arne Slot after the side finished fifth last season. This week’s visitors won both league games against this opponent last term, but can they kick off this season with another three points? Let’s get into the key stats!

Newcastle - Liverpool: Form Analysis
Perhaps understandably, concerns are growing among the Toon Army, as Newcastle United ended the pre-season with three consecutive defeats to Everton, Bayer Leverkusen and Strasbourg.
The end of last season was similarly uninspiring, with the side losing five of their final eight league games (W2 D1) and conceding two or more goals in all but one defeat during that period.
The Magpies earned 32 points from their 19 home league games last season (W10 D2 L7), but conceded 30 goals at this venue across the campaign - more than relegated West Ham and Burnley.
Newcastle are winless in their last nine home league matches against Liverpool!
Liverpool played six matches in pre-season and had a mixed bag of results, notching up three wins, a draw, and two defeats. They scored 11 goals and conceded nine across those six matches.
The Reds failed to win any of their final four league fixtures last term, drawing against Brentford and Chelsea (both 1-1), while losing to Aston Villa (4-2) and arch-rivals Manchester United (3-2).
Notably, Liverpool’s away form was very poor last season. They lost seven of their final nine away games across all competitions (W2) and had the 10th-best record on the road in the top flight (W7 D3 L9).

Newcastle & Liverpool Squad Analysis
As mentioned, Newcastle have seen several high-profile departures over the summer, including that of their two central midfielders Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes, as well as attacker Anthony Gordon.
Adding to concerns in the engine room was confirmation from Jaissel that Joelinton is out for a few weeks with a groin issue, meaning at least one of the team’s new signings, Sean Steur or Aladji Bamba, is likely to make their full debut in this match.
Tino Livramento is still out after sustaining a calf injury at the World Cup. William Osula is likely to operate in the number 10 role, but the new boss will have a big call to make at number nine between Nick Woltemade and Yoanne Wissa.
Can Alexander Isak make an impact for Liverpool against his former employers?
The Swiss international missed both league games against the Magpies through injury last season, but he logged good minutes during pre-season and is almost a guaranteed starter this week, with Hugo Ekitike still on the road to recovery.
Iraola has several other injury absentees to contend with as well, including Conor Bradley (knee), Giovanni Leoni (knee) and Joe Gomez (muscle). Curtis Jones is also a major doubt after sustaining a hip issue during pre-season.
The biggest change for the Reds heading into this match is that Mohamed Salah will no longer be bombing down the right flank following his move to Turkey. Teenage starlet Rio Ngumoha is expected to try and fill the void left by the Egyptian King.

Our Newcastle vs Liverpool Prediction
Newcastle had a forgettable 2025-26 season, and while they will be hoping for much better this term, there are still plenty of concerns for the Toon Army, given the number of player sales over the summer and injuries they are currently dealing with.
Liverpool are also missing a handful of players coming into this season opener, and it will be interesting to see how they fare post Mo Salah. We’re steering clear of the 1x2 market for our main prediction, but we do fancy both teams to get on the scoresheet in this match. Our Newcastle vs Liverpool prediction is BTTS.
