Wessel Nijman makes his debut in the World Matchplay Darts Championship. The Dutchman faces a tough task though as he faces the eighth seed Nathan Aspinall for a place in the last 16.Can the Asp avoid a first round exit? Here's our match prediction.
This tournament is being played at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool. In the first round, matches are being played over the best of 19 legs. It's one of the Triple Crown events in the PDC and Aspinall won the title two years ago but lost in the second round last year.
Aspinall is eighth in the PDC Order of Merit and has shown some impressive form this year. Two European Tour events have been won and he was a semi-finalist in the Premier League. Recently, he was beaten by Luke Humphries in the US Darts Masters final.
Wessel Nijman lost to Aspinall earlier this year in a European Tour event. The Dutchman has rebuilt his career after previously being banned for match-fixing in 2020 and returned to the PDC Tour in 2023.
Nijman has reached two European Tour semi-finals this year and one last four appearance in the Players Championship. He lost in round two of the World Championships and UK Open. We tip Aspinall to win this match.
