Iceland drew their opening group match with Serbia. They were a goal up at the break but the Serbs fought back to level the match. Now they take on Montenegro who  lost their opening game to Hungary 26-24. Iceland finished top of their qualifying group ahead of the Czech Republic, Estonia and Israel. They won five of their six qualifying matches, the only loss being away in the Czech Republic. Iceland didn't take part in the first three European Championships but have been in the finals of every one played this century. Two years ago they finished in sixth place winning six of their nine matches. Their best ever performance in these championships was in 2010 when finishing third. The draw with Serbia ended a run of seven straight wins for Iceland whose last loss was that defeat in the qualifying rounds.

Montenegro made their way into this tournament by being one of the best third placed sides in the qualifiers. They finished behind Slovenia and Bosnia and Herzegovina but won three of their six matches and that saw them through to the finals. This is their sixth straight time in the finals but between 2014 and 2020 they only won one match. It went better in 2022 with three won and lost four as they ended the championships in 11th place. In the run-up to this event they lost three of their four matches. We go for Iceland to get off the mark and win this on a -4.5 goals handicap.
