Borussia Monchengladbach wouldn’t have expected to go into this game ahead of Real Madrid in their group. The German side drew their opening game 2-2 at Inter, while Real slumped to a 3-2 home loss to Red Bull Salzburg. Monchengladbach will be going all out for a win in this game and a win would take them four points clear of the Spanish side at this early stage of the goup. The German side went up to fifth in the Bundesliga when winning 3-2 away at Mainz on Saturday. A good result considering the fact they were 2-1 down with 14 minutes remaining. It was another sign of their problems in defence and Monchengladbach have now conceded in each of their last eight competitive fixtures. They nearly won their first game in this group but conceded a 90th minute goal scored by Romelu Lukaku. Home form has seen them draw both of their Bundesliga games this season. In the Champions League, they have one point from their last three home games.

Real Madrid have had an inconsistent time in the past week. A defeat by newly-promoted Cadiz and then lost at home to Shakhtar Donetsk in their opening Champions League group game. Then came the weekend and they returned to form with a 3-1 away win at Barcelona.  The Spanish side have been a bit of a Jekyll and Hyde team in this competition. They have only won one of their last seven home games after just one defeat in the last three years. Away form has been better though with five wins in the last seven, the other two being losses to PSG and Manchester City. The win over Barcelona on Saturday must have boosted their fragile confidence. Up against a German side that struggles to stop conceding goals, they can get an away win.
