With the international break now in the rearview mirror, FA Cup action bursts back into life with a blockbuster quarter-final battle between Manchester City and Liverpool at the Etihad this Saturday. The Citizens’ most recent FA Cup title came in 2022-23, while the Reds last won football’s oldest trophy in 2021-22. Check out our match prediction below!

After going trophyless in 2024-25, Pep Guardiola is aiming to get his side into the final four of the FA Cup for the eighth season in a row this weekend. The Sky Blues lost the last two finals to Man United and Crystal Palace, but they are on course for a domestic cup double this term, following their Carabao Cup triumph over the Gunners ahead of the March international break.

Arne Slot’s Premier League title defence is over, but his side can still salvage the season with a double of their own, as they are still standing in this competition as well as the Champions League. However, they have already faced City twice this term and lost both encounters, which sees them enter this match as the clear underdog. Let’s get into the key stats!

Manchester City - Liverpool: Form Analysis

Manchester City kicked off their FA Cup campaign with a 10-1 drubbing of Exeter City before ousting Salford 2-0 at home and beating Newcastle United 3-1 away in the fifth round of the competition.

The Citizens’ last match saw them lift the EFL Cup against Arsenal a couple of weeks ago, but they’ve only won two of their last six matches in all competitions. During this period, they were eliminated from the UCL by Real Madrid (5-1 on aggregate).

However, Los Blancos are the only team to leave the Etihad with a victory since late November. Prior to the loss to Madrid last month, City were riding a 14-match unbeaten streak at home across all competitions (W11 D3).

Man City have scored two or more goals in eight of their last nine home games in all competitions!

Meanwhile, Liverpool’s FA Cup campaign has included victories over Barnsley, Brighton & Hove Albion and Wolverhampton Wanderers. They scored three or more goals in each of those wins.

However, the Reds have been well below their best of late with just two wins in their last six matches (D1 L3), though they did see off Galatasaray in that period to qualify for the UCL quarter-finals.

The visitors have lost three of their last four away games, with the only exception being their fifth-round victory over Wolves. They have also won only one of their last four visits to this venue (L3).

Manchester City & Liverpool Squad Analysis

Man City’s biggest injury concerns come at centre-back, where John Stones is now listed as a doubt after sustaining a calf injury while on international duty. Ruben Dias and Josko Gvardiol are also likely to be sidelined, meaning Nathan Ake and Abdukodir Khusanov will likely make up the central defensive pairing.

Nico O’Reilly was the Citizens’ hero at Wembley in the Carabao Cup final, scoring twice within five minutes, and he will almost certainly feature at left-back, with Matheus Nunez, who provided the assist for the second goal, completing the defensive quartet.

Rayan Cherki is expected to get the nod ahead of Phil Foden behind Erling Haaland in the attacking areas. Haaland scored in both Premier League wins over the Reds already this season.

Will Mohamed Salah mark his final visit to the Etihad as a Red with a goal?

The Egyptian King dropped a bombshell during the international break by confirming he will leave Anfield at the end of this season. He has been nursing an injury recently, but will be eager to add to his 21 goal contributions against the Citizens in this one.

Beyond Salah, Slot is facing a bit of an injury crisis, with Alisson, Federico Chiesa, Alexander Isak and Jeremie Frimpong all listed as major doubts. Conor Bradley, Giovanni Leoni, Wataru Endo and Joe Gomez are ruled out entirely.

Owing to the shortage of right-back options, Dominik Szoboszlai might have to step back into defence as cover. Florian Wirtz had a hand in all four of Germany’s goals against Switzerland last week and could be one to watch for the visitors.

Our Manchester City vs Liverpool Prediction

Manchester City will enter this match feeling a lot better about themselves, having secured their first piece of silverware by beating EPL favourites Arsenal to the Carabao Cup title ahead of the international break.

However, the Citizens are short-handed in central defence and were certainly not tested to the max by the Gunners that day. Liverpool, on the other hand, have not been great on the road of late and are also missing key players at the back. Given how both these sides enter this clash, we’re expecting goals at both ends. Our Manchester City vs Liverpool prediction is BTTS.
