Ninth seed Magda Linette takes on unseeded Caroline Bucsa in round two of the Brisbane International. Linette began 2024 ranked 22nd in the world which is 26 places higher than at the start of last year. Linette had a good time down under in 2023 with a run to the semi-finals of the Australian Open. The rest of the year produced just one quarter final (soon after the Australian Open) and a runner-up spot in Guangzhou in September. Linette's 2023 ended poorly with a run of five successive defeats. The Pole received a bye into the second round of this tournament. There's been one previous match between the pair with Linette winning in three sets last year.

Caroline Bucsa was ranked 61st at the commencement of the Brisbane International and that's a career high. The Moldova was ranked 105th at the start of 2023 and made steady progress up the rankings throughout the year. Bucsa has set a new career high of 60th after beating Greet Minnen in the first round. It wasn't easy for her though with the first set being lost 7-5. The next two sets were then won for the loss of only four games including just one in the deciding set. Bucsa ended 2023 strongly by winning a WTA 125 tournament held in Limoges losing just one set in five matches. That included a win over Anna Blinkova who was ranked 50th at the time. Her previous event had seen her reach the last four in Angers, France. We tip Bucsa to continue her good form and win this match.
