21st seed Luciano Darderi is attempting to reach round four of a Grand Slam for only the second time. He takes on wild card Dale Sweeny in the third round of this outdoor hard court Grand Slam. Darderi is over 100 places above his opponent in the rankings. Our prediction is Darderi wins set one and match.

Whoever wins will face either the top seed Alexander Zverev or 25th-seeded Alejandro Tabilo in the last 16.

The only previous Grand Slam fourth round appearance for Darderi came in this year's outdoor hard court Australian Open. The Italian recently reached the last eight in Montreal. To reach round three in New York, he has beaten Harry Wendelken and Dalibor Srvcina, both qualifiers. Each match went to four sets with Darderi winning the opening set.

There's been one previous meeting between these players. Darderi won in the qualifying rounds of the Australian Open three years ago.

Dale Sweeny is playing in the main draw of a Grand Slam for only the third time. Before this tournament, he had never made it past the second round of one. 

The first round saw the Australian beat Corentin Moutet, who retired in the third set. That was followed by a four-set victory over 13th seed Lorenzo Musetti.
