by Steve Ashfield in Carabao Cup Predictions

It was not a good midweek for Liverpool as they exited the Champions League. They will hope for a better Sunday when they take on Newcastle United at Wembley in the Carabao Cup. Can the Reds win the cup for the second successive season? Read our match prediction.

Liverpool have won this competition for a record ten times. A win over Newcastle will see them become the first club since Manchester City in 2021 to retain the trophy. They have reached this final having beaten four Premier League clubs and will want to make it five on Sunday.

The Magpies will be out to stop them and win this competition for the first time. This is their second Carabao Cup final in the space of three years. This year is the 70th anniversary of the last time Newcastle won a domestic cup competition. Winning this trophy on Sunday would be a major achievement for them.

Liverpool - Newcastle: Form Analysis

Liverpool lost to PSG in midweek and their hopes of again winning the Champions League ended in a penalty shootout. The Reds had won four games in a row before that loss and are 15 points clear at the top of the Premier League.

They have played five games on the road to this Wembley showpiece. First up for them was a 5-1 home win over West Ham after conceding an early goal. Their  next three games were all played away from Anfield with wins at Brighton and Southampton.

The semi-finals saw them lose the away first leg to Tottenham 1-0. They fought back well to win the home second leg 4-0. The loss to Spurs is their only defeat in the last 11 Carabao Cup games they have played.

Newcastle United had a good 1-0 win at West Ham on Monday. A win over Liverpool on Sunday will guarantee them European football next season. Six games have had to be played to reach this final.

Tough route to the final for Newcastle.

It was tough in their first match as they needed a penalty shootout to win at Nottingham Forest. They beat AFC Wimbledon 1-0 at home and then won four more games, all against Premier League sides. CChelsea, Brentford and Arsenal were beaten with only one goal conceded.

Liverpool & Newcastle Squad Analysis

Will Arne Slot win his first trophy at Liverpool? Doing so will ease the midweek disappointment of being knocked out of the Champions League. That defeat wasn't the only piece of bad news they had because Trent Alexander-Arnold has been ruled out of this Carabao Cup final.

That means Liverpool have no senior right-back available for this cup final and Jarell Quansah is expected to start the game. He's scored one goal so far in this season's competition. The trouble is it was an own goal against West Ham.

Ibrahima Konate also had to go off against PSG in midweek but is expected to play on Sunday. Mo Salah has only scored once in this season's Carabao Cup but he will hope to add to that tally against Newcastle.

No Gordon for United.

United will be without Anthony Gordon for this match. He is suspended after being sent off in their FA Cup loss to Brighton. His absence will hurt the Magpies as he has scored in their last two Carabao Cup games. He'll be replaced by Harvey Barnes.

Alexander Isak is fit to play and in defence will be Dan Burn who has just been named in the England squad for the first time.

Our Liverpool vs Newcastle Prediction

Liverpool face Newcastle in the Carabao Cup looking to win this competition for a record-extending 11th time. They won this trophy last season, beating Chelsea in the final. Less than a month ago, the Reds beat Newcastle 2-0 at Anfield and Mo Salah will be part of a strong line-up.

It would so much to Newcastle to finally lift a domestic trophy. Their hopes of doing so have been hit by the absence of Gordon and Isak isn't quite in the scoring form he was in earlier this year. Our main Liverpool v Newcastle prediction is Liverpool to win.
