Stage 19 of the Tour de France is the first of two that features the famous Alpe d’Huez, as the tour organisers ramp up the difficulty. At 127.9km, this is the shortest stage bar the time trials, but it contains that famous brutal climb to the line which makes it Tadej Pogačar territory.

Pogačar has more than four and a half minutes in hand over his nearest rival Remco Evenepoel heading into the final two mountain stages. For a lot of riders, that would mean take the wheel and follow your main rival, but Pogačar is built differently. 

He will want to put his stamp on the competition and there is no better place to do that than up one of the most famous climbs in the race. Evenepoel himself has plenty of gap over Isaac del Toro in third but Pogačar’s right hand man has just 20 seconds over Paul Seixas.

Seixas is just 19 years of age, riding in his first Grand Tour. There is the potential there for him to take over from Pogačar in time as the best of the peloton, and a podium finish is there for the taking if he can dig deep over the next couple of stages. 

2022 was the last time that the tour climbed Alpe d’Huez, a stage that also contained the Galibier as tomorrow’s Stage 20 will. That day saw a coming of age for Tom Pidcock who is sat in eighth in the overall standings.
