The final week of the Tour de France gets underway with Stage 16, a 26.1km Individual Time Trial. There is a steady climb to the first 10km before a downhill and the stage flattening out. A time trial with a climb has Remco Evenepoel written all over it.

Evenepoel won the final stage before the second rest day, riding away in the closing stages from Tadej Pogačar with the runner-up looking happy enough to sit second given his closest pursuer, Jonas Vingegaard, had dropped out of the running.

Pogačar is a decent time triallist in his own right, but he has a lead of five minutes over Evenepoel who is now his closest rival on the clock, so this does not feel like a stage that he needs to be riding for a win, but that is not to say that he won’t!

The biggest challenge when it comes to taking the crown from Evenepoel as the best time triallist in recent years has been Filippo Ganna. The INEOS man almost gained the yellow jersey on Stage 1 in the team time trial and will have been waiting for this opportunity.

It feels unlikely that the winner will not be one of the three above, but if there is to be a shock, it is most likely to be Joshua Tarling. Another INEOS man, he was first and second in the two Individual Time Trials at the 2025 Giro, though he is not a man who will relish the climb on this stage.
