The final stage before the second rest day has more than 4,000m of vertical climbing to be done, with the finish at the top of the Plateau de Solaison. A hautes category climb that will test the legs of the very best and a chance for Tadej Pogacar to put one hand on the trophy.

After 14 stages, Tadej Pogacar has a four and a half minute lead over his closest pursuer. A big day here and the Tour is all but over, even with the big climbs of the Alps to come in week three. With a rest day on Monday, he will likely take himself into the red zone on the final climb. 

It could be that a group of elite climbers are in a breakaway from an early stage. This is a near 190km stage, so it is going to take a huge effort to stay away from the marauding Pogacar, but there are a few interesting riders who are worth considering at bigger prices.

Ion Izagirre has enjoyed a resurgent season and has finished in the top 20 in both stages on which he has been part of a break on this tour. Thymen Arensman showed up better on Saturday’s stage and along with Lenny Martinez looks sure to be active. We have not seen much of Abel Balderstone so far for Caja Rural but he is a more than capable attacker on his day.
