Stage 13 of the Tour de France is relatively innocuous until the peloton reaches the Category One climb of Ballon d’Alsace which will blow the field apart. A good descender will be required with plenty of downhill to the finish which leads our prediction to the likes of Tom Pidcock. 

It could be another stage where Tadej Pogačar decides to clear off up the road and ride his rivals into submission from a long way out. He has the talent and the strength to execute that to perfection, but there are tougher stages ahead. 

Not only does the stage winner need to be a good climber, but they have to be an excellent descender and Tom Pidcock is arguably the best in the current peloton at the latter. He has been quiet so far in this tour but that could allow him some leeway from the main competitors. 

Another who is excellent on the downhill stretches is Mathieu van der Poel. He already has a stage win on this tour and although the Cat One is a little on the tough side for him, if he could find himself in the breakaway on the day, he might just be able to get over it well enough to attack on the way down. 

One to think about at a huge price is Matej Mohorič. He is an excellent, attacking descender as well as being a multiple stage winner in the Tour de France, plus taking a stage at the Giro in his career. His 2023 Tour win came on a stage with a long descent into a flat finish.
