Seventh seed Gael Monfils and wildcard Henrique Rocha will meet on Tuesday at the Estoril Open. They will battle in the first round with the winner taking on either Pedro Cachin or Marton Fucsovics next. Henrique Rocha is making his second appearance in Estoril and will hope to finally be able to win a main draw tie. The Portuguese youngster is also making his tour debut for the season here and this is extra motivation to do well. He has compiled a 12-7 record and five of his wins have come in six outings on clay. Rocha won the Murcia Challenger in the final weeks of March to mark his first-ever title at that level. He was unable to build on this though in his next outing and was eliminated in the first round at the Girona Challenger. Rocha is currently ranked outside the ATP top 200 places.
Gael Monfils last played in Estoril in 2019. He made the quarterfinals that season and this remains to be his best-ever result here. The veteran Frenchman will hope for a deeper run in his return. Monfils is making his season debut on clay. He has compiled a wobbly 10-8 record switching from outdoor and indoor hard courts. Despite his inconsistency, Monfils has had some exciting performances. He was a semifinalist in Doha and made it to the fourth round at Indian Wells. The 37-year-old, who is up to 43rd in the live ranking, is coming off a third-round exit in Miami. Monfils is a strong performer on clay courts but has struggled on the surface in recent seasons. The last time he finished with a winning record on clay was back in 2019.
