World number 123 Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard and world number 47 Lorenzo Sonego will meet next at the Lyon Open. They will battle in the first round with the winner playing Gael Monfils or Yoshihito Nishioka for a place in the quarter-finals. Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard is playing in the main draw of a tour event for the first time this season. He has been in good form in the challenger circuit and will hope to replicate this here. The Frenchman has compiled a 26-11 record, winning three challenger crowns. Perricard is coming off a quarter-final run at the Bordeaux Challenger which allowed him to extend his clay court record to 6-4. The 20-year-old will serve off against Sonego up six places to 117th in the live ranking.
Lorenzo Sonego is having a difficult season and has lost more than he has won. In 28 matches, the Italian has been defeated 17 times. However, he has had his most success on clay, his favoured surface. Seven of his wins have come on clay and only on the surface has he won multiple times at an event. Sonego, who has alternated between the tour and challenger circuits, is coming off a semi-final run on home soil in the Turin Challenger. He was also a quarter-finalist in Marrakech to begin his clay campaign. Sonego has won almost 200 matches on clay in his career and should arrive for this fixture confident of victory. The 29-year-old starts his week down three places to 50th in the live ranking.
