Ghana vs Uruguay Predictions & Betting Tips (World Cup)

 by Daniel Ngulu |

The final round of Group H matches will present a much-awaited reunion between Uruguay and Ghana, the two nations having met in a momentous clash in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. This high-stakes clash is scheduled to be played at the Al Janoub Stadium on Friday, 2nd December. The match finds Ghana second in the group with three points and Uruguay are bottom with just a point. A win will assure Ghana of a place in the knockout stage of this competition but they can still qualify with a draw if South Korea drops points against Portugal or wins by less than two goals. As for Uruguay, they have no option but to go for a win in this game. A win for La Celeste coupled with a failure of South Korea to win will see Uruguay finish second. The Uruguayans could also advance should South Korea win their match against Portugal, although would have to do so by a margin greater than that by which the Koreans win, thus seeing them through on goal difference or goals scored total. If the goals scored is level between the two sides then fair play points will come into play, of which both teams are currently level with -3 each.

Form Analysis

Ghana are coming into this game straight from their third win in five matches. They survived a second half scare to beat South Korea 3-2 in their second game of Group H. That was their third time in five matches conceding two or more goals and they have just two clean sheets in their last five matches but they’ve scored two or more goals in each of their last three matches. Ghana have failed to score in one of their last five matches and after winning the first of their last six World Cup matches, they will be fired up for this game, with a place in the next round just 90 minutes away. In this competition, Ghana have conceded five goals in two matches and all these goals have come in the second half. As they go into this game, Ghana will be pushed to exact revenge on the team that painfully eliminated them from the quarter finals of the 2010 competition in controversial style. Ghana may however lack the competitive edge going into this game, having won just three of their last 10 matches in competitive action. They have three clean sheets in the 10 matches and six of the 10 matches have produced under 2.5 goals. Both teams have scored in four of Ghana’s last five competitive matches. Meanwhile, Uruguay are still in search of their first win at this competition; their progress from the group is fully dependent on them winning here. They have two wins and two losses in their last five matches, the most recent being the 2-0 defeat to Portugal, which came on the back of a 0-0 draw with Korea Republic. Uruguay have three clean sheets in five matches but they have failed to score in four of their last six matches. Five of their last six matches have produced under 2.5 goals. in a run of 11 matches, Uruguay have lost just two times and registered eight clean sheets while conceding more than a goal in just one of the 11 matches. Their attack has seriously failed at this competition though, and Uruguay are without a goal going into the third match of the group and in their last three World Cup matches, they have failed to score. Uruguay come into this game with four wins in their last 10 competitive matches.

Squad analysis

Ghana had Mohammed Kudus to thank for their win over Korea. His 68th minute goal was in the end the match winner after the West African giants had fumbled a 2-0 half time lead in three second half minutes. Kudus was also a top performer in their opening game as Ghana lost 3-2 to Portugal and he will be expected to spread his magic for Ghana in this game too. Kudus comes in a good package that has the Ayew brothers, Jordan and Andre, in attack. Andre scored the team’s first goal in this competition and Jordan was an instant spark in his first start in Qatar, providing the assist for the second goal in the win over Korea Republic. Whatever they need to do, Ghana will have to tighten up defensively as it has emerged that is their weakest area. Arsenal’s defensive midfielder Thomas Partey may be needed to shield the defence more. Uruguay, on their part, have confirmed Ronald Araujo will be out of this game. The Barcelona defender came to the competition with fitness concerns and remains unlikely to feature here. Apart from Araujo, Uruguay will go into this game with a lot of questions over their aging squad. A number of key players in this team were in the team that beat Ghana in the 2010 World Cup and the age issue has been floated as one of the causes for the setbacks at the team. However, youthful players like Liverpool’s Darwin Nunez and Real Madrid’s Federico Valverde should blend the experience offered by the likes of Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani to lift the team.

Our Ghana vs Uruguay prediction

These two sides will be out to bag three points in this game; Uruguay will need a win more, and we expect them to go all out on the offensive after having failed to score in the opening two games. They will hope to cash in on Ghana’s defensive weaknesses but Ghana will also be aware that Uruguay must attack, so they will want to take advantage of open spaces in their defence. Ghana have a good run in attack but they’ve been weak defensively in the second half of both their games and this is also when they’ve scored their most goals. Uruguay also conceded twice in the second half in the last game so we will back the second half to bear the most goals in this game.

Other interesting tips

Both teams to score - odds : 1.95 at Bet365

Uruguay have no option but to attack in this game, and with the quality they possess in the team, we don’t expect them to go a third game without scoring. Diego Alonso will most likely start a front three that has Luis Suarez, Darwin Nunez and Edison Cavani, while sacrificing a bit defensively and in Ghana’s consistency in attack, we will back both teams to score here.

Either team to win - odds : 1.25 at Bet365

An end to end game is expected here; both teams will give their all to advance after this game so we don’t expect much sitting back and a draw isn’t very likely here so back either Ghana or Uruguay to win.
