France have it all to do when they take on Fiji in the final group-stage match of the 2024 Olympics Rugby Sevens competition on Thursday. Les Bleus are currently second in Pool C with five points, while the Flying Fijians are top of the group with six points. Here’s our prediction of this crucial top-of-the-table clash.
Given that a losing result earns the team one point, France will be featuring in the knockouts of the competition, but they will want first place to receive a favourable draw in the next round.
The issue, though, is that Les Bleus have not been anywhere near their best at the Games, kicking off their first match with a 12-12 draw against the USA, which they went on to win in extra time. The second match saw the hosts post an unconvincing 19-12 win over Uruguay.
So far, Les Bleus have been indebted to none other than the talismanic Antoine du Pont, who scored a decisive try against the South Americans just when they were getting back in the tie.
To illustrate how close this match against Fiji could be, we can look at the last five results, which show that Fiji have won two, France won one and two ended in a draw at the final whistle. None of those victories came by more than seven points.
The Flying Fijians made no mistake in their opening matches, running in 40 points against Uruguay in their tournament opener and 38 against the USA in match two. They conceded just 12 in each of those games.
Indeed, while they are guaranteed a place in the knockouts, rest assured that the Pacific Islanders will want the top spot in the group.
