The penultimate match in week eight of the Currie Cup season will see the Free State Cheetahs playing host to the Golden Lions on Saturday afternoon. The Cheetahs are in third place in the standings, while the Lions are second. Let’s get into the match prediction. 

The Free State Cheetahs have not had it all their own way this season, with the Blue Bulls and their upcoming opponents putting in solid performances so far to make a case for top spot in the group stage. 

After seven rounds, the defending champions have a record of four wins, two losses and a draw, with their 24-point tally leaving them nine points shy of the current leader the Bulls, who are still unbeaten. 

Last week the Cheetahs suffered an upset defeat on their home patch to the Sharks, who left the Free State with the points and a 25-20 victory. 

Meanwhile, the Golden Lions have been massively improved this term, currently second in the standings after failing to reach the qualifiers last season. 

The Johannesburg outfit have won six and lost just one of their seven matches in the competition so far, and have also notched up four bonus points which sees them trailing the league leaders by just three. 

The Lions put in another stellar performance last weekend, when they took down Western Province 41-22, marking their third consecutive win in the competition.
