The 2026 World Cup co-hosts Canada open their campaign with a first-ever meeting with Bosnia & Herzegovina on Friday, 12th June. This match will be staged at the Toronto Stadium, Canada featuring at this tournament for the third time and Bosnia making a second appearance. Both nations have proven tough to beat lately but carry here at least five draws each in the last eight games, making a draw a viable prediction.
This marks a second consecutive World Cup for Canada, and they are still in search of the first point at this level. They lost all their six matches at Mexico 1986 and Qatar 2022. Only El Salvador have played as many World Cup matches and recorded straight defeats.
Bosnia will be out to ensure Canada’s problems at the global stage extend. They should be aware by now that five of Canada’s losses in this tournament were inflicted by European nations. The UEFA side will, however, be looking to improve on their own unimpressive World Cup record, having lost twice and won once.

Canada - Bosnia Herzegovina: Form Analysis
Canadian fans will be holding their breath as the nation seeks a first-ever win at the World Cup. All their previous six games at this level ended in defeat, so the anxiety is expected. Their preparation for this tournament didn’t particularly end on a high. Canada needed an own goal to draw 1-1 with Ireland, a nation ranked 29 places below them.
That marked an eighth unbeaten outing for the host nation, but five of those were draws. Much of the Canadians’ hope will not just be on the fact that they are playing at home. Having enjoyed a good run when playing in Toronto is a factor not to be overlooked. They lost just once in 28 matches there (W18, D9).
Both these nations are unbeaten in eight games, with a combined 11 draws.
Bosnia & Herzegovina’s path to improvement is as clear as Canada’s. This is their second World Cup appearance, and they want to do better than their group stage exit in the first. Making their debut in Brazil 2014, Bosnia managed three points after winning once and losing twice.
Heading into their first meeting with Canada, Bosnia will also be desperate to improve on a run of five straight draws. Following a 1-1 draw with Panama and a 0-0 stalemate with North Macedonia, they come here having only managed two wins across their last eight matches. They’ll still be confident, riding on a wave that included locking Italy out of these finals.

Canada & Bosnia Herzegovina Squad Analysis
Canada’s talisman remains Jonathan David ahead of this tournament. The Juventus man will bear the burden of expectation from a whole nation. He has to improve on a run of just one goal in the last 10 matches for club and country. The forward, however, has enjoyed a much better run in major competitions with his country. Across the last two, he scored four and assisted one.
Expectations on the 26-year-old will be more heightened by the fact that skipper Alphonso Davies is likely to miss the opening game. The Bayern Munich man is battling a muscle injury and only started six Bundesliga matches last season. He is Canada's only scorer at the World Cup so far.
Canada’s Jonathan David will be looking to add to his 39 international goals.
On the other side, Bosnia have a very experienced head to rely on for goals - Edin Dzeko. At 40 years, the Schalke 04 man remains the nation’s top outlet for goals. He netted six times in nine appearances during the qualifiers. He also led Bosnia at the finals 12 years ago.
This is most likely his final World Cup, and the former Manchester City man will want to leave a big impression. He will need to improve on his tally of one goal in the last five matches for club and country. In Bosnia’s two warmup matches, however, he was an unused sub.

Our Canada vs Bosnia Herzegovina Prediction
Stalemates have been the story of Bosnia & Herzegovina’s recent matches. They look to improve on that against a host nation struggling to put up a consistent run. There is a real element of unpredictability to this encounter, with Canada enjoying home comforts but against a really tough opponent.
The Canadians, who have drawn six times in matches they hosted, are still in search of a first World Cup win or draw. Bosnia, on the other hand, are determined to better their performance, having posted five straight stalemates. Our prediction for Canada v Bosnia & Herzegovina is for a draw.
Canada vs Bosnia Herzegovina Alternative Predictions
BTTS
Bosnia have only failed to score once in their last 10 matches. The defence has, however, not been as tight as they’d have loved. Eight times in their latest nine games, both teams scored. The Canadians have also posted an improvement on their numbers in attack.
They failed to score in just one of the last six matches. A collision of these stats from teams desperate for a winning start points us to a game where both sides are likely to score.
