The highest level of club football competition in South America, the Copa Libertadores, is set to get underway this week, and in our featured match, we will see Nacional Potosi welcome El Nacional to Estadio Hernando Siles for a First Round Leg 1 clash on Wednesday. The hosts finished last season in 4th place in the Bolivian Championship with 42 points, eight behind Bolivar and 11 behind eventual league winners The Strongest. They ended last season in mixed form, winning four and losing two of their last six matches; however, they’ve started this season poorly, losing their first match 3-0 to Oriente Petrolero last weekend. Nacional Potosi has not featured in this competition since 2012 and will want to get off to a good start in front of their home crowd.
El Nacional won the LigaPro Serie B last season in fairly impressive fashion, recording 63 points in their 36 matches, with 18 wins, nine draws, and nine losses. They finished the season seven clear of Independiente and Libertad, who ended in second and third place, respectively. El Nacional closed out the 2022 season in good form, having lost just one of their final 11 matches in the league, winning seven and drawing the other three. The Ecuadorian Liga Pro is yet to get underway this season, but El Nacional has had two friendly matches during the pre-season and won both fairly well. The visitors have failed to make it past the first round in their last three Copa Libertadores appearances in 2017, 2012, and 2009, but will fancy their chances of progressing against this opposition.
