The final day in the MLB regular season sees the Boston Red Sox hosting their division rivals the Tampa Bay Rays at Fenway Park. The Rays will be participating in the 2022 postseason for a fourth consecutive season after securing the final Wild Card spot with their 86-75 record. The Red Sox, however, will miss out on the playoffs for a third time in the past four seasons since winning the World Series in 2018. Boston’s 77-84 record sees them bottom of the AL East and nine games behind the Rays for the final playoff spot. They’ll look to end the season on a positive note after winning their last two straight while the Rays will be desperate to put an end to their poor form and end their four game losing streak before the playoffs start.

Tampa Bay will have to contend with the Cleveland Guardians in the Wild Card series with all three games taking place in Cleveland. The Red Sox have at least finished above .500 at Fenway Park in what has been a disappointing season overall. Boston is 42-38 at home on the year and has won their last five consecutive games in front of the home fans.

Taking the mound for the Red Sox is Nick Pivetta who is 10-12 on the season with a 4.56 ERA. Pivetta will look to bounce back after giving up four earned runs in five innings of work against the Blue Jays in his last appearance, a game that the Red Sox would ultimately go on to lose 9-0. Boston has lost four of Pivetta’s last five starts. On the other side, Josh Flemming gets the nod for the Rays and will be hoping to improve his 2-4 record and 6.23 ERA on the final day of the season. Flemming’s high ERA is a concern and the Red Sox should have little trouble in getting to the lefty.

We’re going to back over 8 runs to be scored as our bet for this one. These two pitchers have really been struggling in their last few starts and it’s unlikely that things are going to turn around on the final day of the season. Tampa Bay is on an awful run but should fancy their chances to knock a few runs off Pivetta who has previously allowed six earned runs in 10 innings pitched in his last two starts against the Rays. The Red Sox, meanwhile, have been excellent against lefties this season and even more so at Fenway Park. They should be able to get to Flemming here as they look to send the Rays into the playoffs on a five game losing streak.
