Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen had contrasting starts to the season in the traditional German Cup opening games, but both will target winning starts in the Bundesliga when they face off. Dortmund plays host, having started off with a 3-0 away win over 1860 Munich in the German Cup. Life without Erling Haaland started on a high for the hosts with Donyell Malen, Jude Bellingham and Karim Adeyemi scoring the goals that guided them through a comfortable cup outing. Their preseason form wasn’t the best, finishing with two losses, but Dortmund proved that doesn’t hold much; they finished second last season and will want to do better this season. They will have to address their defensive issues though, if they hope to do better. Dortmund conceded the most goals among the top eight finishers in the Bundesliga last season.

Bayer Leverkusen were humiliated in the German Cup, getting eliminated at the first hurdle by lower league side Elversberg, in a 4-3 loss. They went to the game as favorites but trailed from the second minute, and not even goals from Patrik Schick, Charles Aranguiz and Adam Hlozek would save them. It was another case of their defensive woes, having conceded 47 times in the league last season. Their last five league matches have seen just one clean sheet, with both teams scoring in three of the five and Leverkusen, third place finishers last season, failing to score in one of the last five league games. Three of their last five league matches produced over 2.5 goals and they finished five points behind Dortmund last season. As they seek to improve on that finish, they go into this game unbeaten in five away league games.
