Ben Shelton locks horns with Denis Shapovalov in the third round of the 2026 US Open tonight. Both of Ben Shelton's matches in this competition have seen the first set produce fewer than 10 games, including eight of his last nine matches. Our prediction supports another low-scoring opening set.

Ben Shelton rallied from five games down in the opening set against Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor before going on to thump him in the competition’s first round. He also saw off Pole Hubert Hurkacz in four sets, winning 6–3, 5–7, 7–6(7–3), 7–5 to progress to this round. 

Both of those matches saw the first set produce no more than nine total games. The American No. 1 has now seen the opening sets in eight of his last nine matches produce no more than nine total games, thanks to his powerful serve (78.1% first-serve points won in the tournament) and ability to create early breaks. 

Denis Shapovalov got the better of Serbia’s Miomir Kecmanovic in the first round, winning in four sets, and then eased past Luca van Assche in straight sets in the second round, winning 6–0, 6–4, 7–6(9–7). The opening sets in seven of his last 11 matches have ended with under 9.5 total games.
