Belgium and Bulgaria will lock horns in Week 1 of the 2026 Volleyball Nations League on Wednesday afternoon. The Red Dragons ran the Lions to the wire in their last encounter, and we’re going with another tight contest here as our primary prediction.
It is going to be a big day for Belgium, as they will be making their first-ever appearance in the Nations League, having earned qualification through their world ranking (15th).
The Red Dragons have been one of the most improved teams in world volleyball over the past two years and lost by a single set to this opponent during the Olympic Games qualifiers in 2023.
Belgium narrowly lost to Italy in a warm-up match just over a week ago, but they have won eight of their last 11 matches across all competitions.
Meanwhile, Bulgaria have reason for optimism entering this tournament after recording their best-ever placement in the 2025 edition, finishing 11th, falling just short of the quarter-finals.
The Lions have played three games in preparation for this tournament and won the first two against Ukraine and Serbia before losing their final match 3-0 against world number-one Poland.
Bulgaria lost the World Championship playoff final 3-1 to Italy in September last year, but that was one of only two defeats they have suffered in their last 10 games.

Our Belgium vs Bulgaria Prediction
Belgium’s rise over the last two years has been incredibly impressive, underlined by the fact that the only teams they have lost to since August 2 of last year were Italy (twice) and the Czech Republic.
Bulgaria are the more seasoned side and should get the win here, but they had to dig deep to beat this opponent in their last encounter, and we feel the Red Dragons will make a fist of this one as well. Our Belgium vs Bulgaria prediction is Belgium +1.5.
