League leaders Bayern Munich host seventh place Mainz 05 at the Allianz Arena on matchday 15 of the Bundesliga season. The home side come into this one on the back of a victory in Der Klassiker, usually their toughest match of the season, winning 3-2 away at Dortmund. They’ve opened up a four point lead at the top of the table and currently sit on 34 points with 11 wins, one draw and two losses. Mainz are coming off an impressive 3-0 home win against Wolfsburg which puts them on 21 points for the season. Julian Nagelsmann’s Bayern Munich side have scored an astounding 45 goals through the first 14 games, keeping them on track to break the goals scored record set by the 1971-72 Bayern team with 101. Despite having one of the best attacks in world football, the German giants have been vulnerable defensively this season. The central defense pairing of Upamecano and Lucas Hernandez has looked unconvincing at times and that has led to the Bavarians conceding 15 times in the league.
Mainz have been very impressive under manager Bo Svensson. After orchestrating one of the Bundesliga’s greatest ever relegation escapes at the end of last year, his side have carried over that good form into this year's campaign. A key to their success so far has been their defensive resolve - conceding only 14 goals this season and giving them the second best defensive record in the league. They will certainly have their work cut out for them as they try to figure out a way to stop a Bayern Munich side who have scored in 61 straight Bundesliga matches. A significant factor that should help them with their task is that Germany has been limiting the amount of supporters that can enter the stadiums due to a rise in COVID-19 cases. This match will be played behind closed doors meaning that Bayern Munich won’t have the support of the 75,000 fans that they usually attract.
