Barcelona’s La Liga title challenge is already looking doomed to failure. They begin the weekend down in ninth place and need three points at home to Levante who are one place above the relegation zone. Barcelona aren’t just ninth but a massive 12 points behind leaders Atletico Madrid and not even with a game in hand.  Whisper it quietly but the mighty Barcelona are only three points above the relegation zone. They are six points behind fourth placed Real Madrid with a game in hand. Of their first ten league games, four have been lost. The past three seasons has seen them lose just eight out of 114. Last weekend saw them 2-1 at Cadiz, their second loss in three league games. Their away form is a big problem with just four points from five games. Home form is much better though with ten points so far from five matches with the only defeat being inflicted by Real Madrid. 15 goals have already been scored at home with nine in the last two against Real Betis and Osasuna. However, their woes continued on Tuesday when losing 3-0 at home to Juventus in the Champions League. This is the first of three straight home league games, the others are against Real Sociedad and Valencia, Three wins are needed if they want to start climbing the table.

Levante are only outside the relegation places on goal difference. Although 17th in the table, they will draw level on points with Barcelona if winning this match. Levante began the season well with a 3-1 away win at Osasuna. However, they lost the next three without scoring a goal. Levante went eight league games without a win before their 3-0 home win over Getafe last weekend. They are actually on a six game unbeaten run going into this game. Levante had drawn five straight league games 1-1 before last weekend’s win. Away from home, they have won one league game but the other four have produced two draws and losses to Sevilla and Athletic Bilbao. Their last 11 away league games against Barcelona have all been lost, with some heavy defeats included. A bet on Barcelona to win this game leading at both half and full time is the suggested wager. There’s a lot more work for them before they are anything like title contenders.
