It was a long evening in Sweden for Ballymena United as they lost 7-0 away to Malmo. This Europa League first qualifying round tie looks to be well beyond the Irish side. They will want to restore some pride though in this home second leg. It was alright for the first half hour but then the floodgates opened and they were 3-0 down by half time. The goals continued in the second half and by 54 minutes it was 6-0. Thankfully only one more goal was scored with none conceded in the last 16 minutes. The defeat equalled their previous worst loss in European football, a 7-0 defeat by Odense and that was at home. Ballymena won at home against Runavik in this year's preliminary round. That ended a run of five straight home defeats with no goals scored.
40 years ago this year Malmo played in the final of the European Cup losing to Nottingham Forest. They have won all three of their games against sides from Northern Ireland with a 13-0 aggregate. Last season saw them reach the third qualifying round of the Champions League. That led to them being transferred to the Europa League where they lost to eventual winners Chelsea in the last 32. They are currently four points clear at the top of the Swedish league with only one loss in their last 18 matches in all competitions. This looks booked for another tough night for Ballymena and the tip is for Malmo to get the win leading at both half and full time.
