Augsburg will kick off their new Bundesliga campaign with a home match against Werder Bremen on Saturday. Both teams booked DFB Pokal second round berths after wins last weekend and will hope to build on them. Read on for our prediction of this match.
Last season Augsburg’s good run against Werder Bremen came to a screeching halt. They lost home and away on their way to finishing the season in the bottom half. Generally, it wasn’t a great season for Fuggerstädter, who lost five more matches than their wins in the league.
In the final stages of the campaign, they had the poorest run, losing all their five matches. It could get worse after their top scorer Ermedin Demirovic left for Champions League bound Stuttgart. Augsburg will hope to improve on their six wins at home all season.
Werder Bremen didn’t have a spectacular 2023/24 either, but they finished in the top half, two places above Augsburg. Their ending to the season was impressive, as they went unbeaten in the final five league matches, winning three.
One of those was a 3-0 away victory at Augsburg. With it they did a double against their hosts, scoring five times and keeping clean sheets in the process. Werder Bremen picked up from there with a 3-1 away win at Energie Cottbus in the DFB Pokal.
Keke Topp, returning from Schalke, scored a hat trick in the game and will hope it marks the start to a stellar season. Unbeaten in their last six competitive matches, Die Werderaner will feel confident about their chances here.
In this run they can even think of bettering their away form, which reads two wins in seven competitive matches.
