Wednesday in the Association sees an Eastern Conference matchup as the 10th-place Atlanta Hawks take on the 15th-placed Detroit Pistons. Atlanta is battling for the final play-in tournament spot although it is looking like they have it wrapped up with a 6.5 game lead over the Nets in 11th. The Hawks are 35-40 on the season and trail the ninth-placed Bulls by half a game. They are almost certain to meet Chicago in the play-in tournament first round and will be aiming to leapfrog them to secure home court in that game. Atlanta has been in an excellent vein of form lately, winning five of their last six following their latest 113-101 away victory over the Bulls on Monday. The most impressive part of this recent winning surge is their pair of wins over the first-place Boston Celtics. Atlanta is playing with an extreme amount of confidence at the moment and will be a dangerous team for the Bulls, 76ers or Heat to face in any potential play-in games.

In comparison, the Pistons have nothing left to play for except to avoid the ignominy of finishing with the league’s worst record. Detroit sits dead-last in the East standings with a 13-62 record, putting them just a single game behind the 14th-placed Wizards. The visitors are coming off a close 110-108 home loss to the Grizzlies, their ninth defeat in the last 10 games overall. Led by Cade Cunningham’s 36 points, the Pistons played well enough to get the win in their last outing. They shot an impressive 50% from the field and 39% from three but fell apart in the second half after leading by 13 at the break. They’ll be hoping to bounce back here but have found it tough to consistently score points over the last month where they have averaged just 103.8 points per game (16 games).
