Both Athletic Club and Sevilla will be seeking a rise when they face off in Bilbao after poor performances in recent La Liga matches. The two start the weekend rooted low in the league standings, with Athletic 16th on six points and Sevilla 13th on seven points though with a game in hand. Athletic Club’s last outing ended in a 1-0 loss to Osasuna, making it three losses in their last four matches and in the three losses they have also failed to score. Each of their last four matches have ended in under 2.5 goals and they have just one clean sheet to show for their six matches this season. At home, matters have not been rosy for Athletic Club in recent matches. Though they won their last home match, beating Levante 2-0, that was their only home win in La Liga in five outings. All the earlier four ended in losses, and they failed to score in three. They are also winless in the last three meetings with Sevilla.

The visitors, Sevilla, got some reprieve in midweek with a home win over Rennes in the Champions League. After the 1-0 win, courtesy of Luuk de Jong’s goal, Sevilla will be hoping to start a better run in La Liga. They have failed to win their last three league matches, and the last two have ended in defeats, falling 1-0 to Granada and Eibar. Sevilla are clearly struggling to match last season’s form when they went all the way to win the Europa League and they will be looking at their record against Athletic as motivation heading to this game. They only had a comfortable outing in La Liga in their opening game, as they beat Cadiz 3-1. After that they haven’t scored more than a goal and have only one clean sheet in five league games. While they have not been very prolific in front of goal, having scored more than once in one of their eight matches, it is worth noting that Sevilla do not concede a lot either. They have conceded more than once in only one game this season – the Super Cup clash against Bayern Munich.
