Aston Villa suffered a crashing defeat in their last match and will be gunning for a return to winning ways when they welcome Southampton at Villa Park on Sunday. Two points separate the sides, Villa on 12 and in third place, while Southampton have 10 points and are placed seventh. Ahead of this game, for Aston Villa, the wounds are still fresh after a 3-0 thrashing by Leeds United in their last game. That was their first defeat in the league this season, and it ended a four-match winning run. Tracking back to the close of last season, Villa had an eight-game unbeaten run in the league before facing Leeds United, and now they can only collect the bits and pieces. It is a second straight home game and hopefully they can make it count, going to the clash on four wins and three clean sheets in their last five home matches. It is here that they beat Liverpool 7-2 a few weeks ago and also beat Arsenal as they fought relegation last season. Villa have failed to score just twice in their last 10 matches in the league but have scored in six of their last seven meetings with Southampton. They are however, winless in their last eight matches against Southampton.

Both sides have scored in six of the last seven meetings between Aston Villa and Southampton and looking at the way the two have started the season, this could happen again on Sunday. Southampton head to this game well motivated after their win over league leaders Everton. Their rise this season has been gradual and after outsmarting the league leaders, they will be keen to inflict the same on the third placed team. The saints are unbeaten in four straight league matches, winning three and have kept clean sheets in the three. In four of their last five matches, Southampton have scored two goals or more, and have shown a great battling spirit. They lost their opening three matches of the season, but have since recovered well and the 3-3 draw with Chelsea in their last away match should motivate them going here. So far, they have one loss, a win and a draw in their three away matches in the league.
