Salzburg need to beat the already-qualified Aston Villa to have any hopes of qualifying for the UEFA Europa League (UEL) knockouts as the teams clash in this matchday eight fixture. This match on Thursday between the second-placed Villans and the 28th-placed ‘Red Bulls’ comes with our prediction of both teams scoring goals.

Villa are already through to the round of 16 as one of the top eight sides after picking up 18 points from their first seven matches in this competition (W6, L1). Salzburg started this round outside the top 24 with six points (W2, L5) and need to win here and hope other results go in their favour to move up the table into play-off spots.

Home coach Unai Emery is likely to rotate his squad to keep them fresh, but having lost 1-0 to Everton in their last home match, he would be looking to get back to winning ways. Salzburg have struggled on the road in Europe this season but have no other option than to give it their all in this fixture. Is there an upset in the making in Birmingham? Aston Villa - Salzburg: Form Analysis

Villa edged Newcastle United 2-0 in the English Premier League (EPL) last weekend in a tactical game. That result kept the Villans four points behind the EPL leaders, Arsenal, boosting the hopes of home fans.

The hosts have been one of the best sides in the UEL league phase this season, coming here on the back of four successive wins. That included winning all three at home, but a 1-0 loss to Everton in their last match here ended Villa’s run of 11 consecutive wins in all competitions.

Villa have seen over 2.5 goals in five of their last seven home games.

Salzburg defeated Basel 3-1 at home last week to stay alive in the UEL competition. It was their third win in four competitive matches (L1), although that lone defeat came in this competition.

The Austrians need to continue their winning form, because five defeats in the first six matchdays (W1) hindered their progress in the points tally. Worryingly for the visitors, they have lost all three of their away games in the league phase of this competition.

Aston Villa & Salzburg Squad Analysis

The hosts will be without French midfielder Boubacar Kamara for the rest of the season. John McGinn was injured against Everton and is out of contention for this fixture. On a positive note, Amadou Onana is likely to push for a starting role, and so could Leon Bailey.

Emery could go for rotation of his squad with progression in Europe already guaranteed. Their 4-2-3-1 system could see the likes of Jadon Sancho, Leon Bailey, and Evann Guessand form the attacking unit.

Guessand has two goals in six UEL games this season.

Salzburg will be visiting England without the injured duo of Takumu Kawamura and John Mellberg. There are no other new injury concerns for the visitors, who are set to welcome back Stefan Lainer.

They lined up in a 4-3-3 formation against Basel last time out, although they regularly used the 4-2-3-1 system in previous matches. All eyes will be on the young 18-year-old Kerim Alajbegovic, who is likely to lead their attack.

Our Aston Villa vs Salzburg Prediction

Villa are already through to the round of 16 but wouldn’t want to halt their winning momentum. They won 11 consecutive matches in all competitions between November and December but have since lost a bit of steam. Four wins from their last seven competitive games is not the output manager Unai Emery would be targeting ahead of a busy schedule. Salzburg have bigger stakes in this fixture as they need a win to remain in contention for play-offs.

That could add spice to the contest, and our Aston Villa vs Salzburg prediction is BTTS.

Kerim Alajbegovic to score anytime

Odds 5

The young Bosnian forward Kerim Alajbegovic has been in great scoring form for the visitors, netting a brace in each of his last two competitive games. That included a winning pair of goals in Salzburg’s 3-1 win over Basel in the last round. He could be the focal point for the visiting side once again.
