The last eight of the clay court Italian Open sees top seed Aryna Sabalenka take on eighth-seeded Qinwen Zheng. Can the Chinese player beat Sabalenka for the first time? Here’s our match prediction.
Qinwen Zheng is playing this WTA 1000 tournament for the third time. All three appearances have seen the Chinese player make it to the quarter-finals. It's going to be a tough task reaching her first semi-final in Rome.
The 22-year-old has won five of her seven matches on clay this year. This is her second quarter-final in 2025 on this surface. Zheng is eighth in the live rankings but only 23rd in the Live Race.
In Rome, Zheng has beaten Olga Danilovic, Magdalena Frech and Bianca Andreescu without dropping a set. To reach the last four, Zheng must beat Sabalenka for the first time. All six of their previous meetings have been won by the world number one but this is their first match on clay.
Sabalenka has made a strong start to this year’s clay court season. The world number one was the losing finalist in Stuttgart and then won the Madrid Open. Two matches have been played so far in Rome and neither Anastasia Potapova or Marta Kostyuk won a set against her.
